About JAM; Japanese Association of Museums
Japanese Association of Museums (JAM) was founded in 1928 and incorporated in 1940. It is the only organization of all types of museums and its members. In Japan, there are approximately 4,000 museums with various specifications from history, art, science and so on. Having the one-forth of them as its members, JAM plays a central role for strengthening the foundation of and to further develop all the museum institutions in order for the each institution to fulfill their own missions which ultimately aims to enrich Japanese society and people's life.
The secretariat for Japanese National Committee for ICOM (International Council of Museums) is also located at the office of JAM.
The mission of the Association is to conduct surveys and researches, and to provide advice and assistance for the promotion of museums in order to enhance lifelong learning of youths and adults, and to contribute to the development of Japanese culture.
